Life as a Hairstylist’s Apprentice: Book Work, Book Work

I’ve been reading a lot in the text book lately. I’ve been trying to get more book work done, catching up on homework, and tests..blah blah blah! All the boring stuff..but it has to be done!  I’ve got 4 tests to take by the end of this week, so I’ve been working really hard, and trying to keep up with my studying!! So far, on all my tests, I’ve been scoring in the mid-to-high 80’s.   My thoughts are that I’ve been doing pretty good, and definitely passing, hehe!!  One thing I did come across in my reading of this chapter is all about nail diseases and disorders.  I am so glad I am going to be doing hair and NOT nails!! Even though I have to do a manicure for the state test at least it will be on a mannequin.  I have an understanding for the nail disorders, but it’s not something I’d like to go into a career field. Some of these nail disorder photos really freaked me out.  It also makes you think twice about where your going to get a Mani-pedi.  MAKE SURE IT’S CLEAN!

Until Next Time!

Life as a Hairstylist’s Apprentice: Chemical Relaxers

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  During the Pennsylvania winter Marina has been squeezing in time for snowboarding, studying, and rocking some hair.  Since the graduation of perms she’s moved onto chemical relaxers aka hair straighteners.  It’s literally a chemical solution that “relaxes” or loosens curly hair.

Allstar kid Andy!! Sits still in the chair and never moves his head…

photo

Allstar kid Andy!! Sits still in the chair and never moves his head…He looks like an adult.

“Keep your head straight, Andy, so u get an even haircut,” says Sean Henry.

A tip for stylists and dealing with children’s first haircuts is try to talk to children prior to cutting their hair; gradually introduce them to the tools you migh use so they fell comfortable and know it’s harmless.

Tips for parents and you child’s haircuts is to have your child attend one of your haircut appointments so they can feel comfortable in the salon and with your stylist.  Then they can see mommy and daddy do it too ..it doesn’t hurt.   Honestly who can blame a kid for screaming and crying at their first hair appointment when all they see is a pair of scissors coming at their face from a complete stranger!

Life as a Hairstylist’s Apprentice – Holiday break was a Charm

My holiday break is over.  I had a full 3 weeks off school. Woo hooooo! Although, I was still doing book work during my travels!  I’ve been enjoying my down time snowboarding!  It’s so nice to be able to get outside and relax in the wintertime!!  I travled south for Xmas, to Charleston, South Carolina, to visit my family, and then off to Florida for New Years to see my lovely Grandma!!  I enjoyed seeing the different types of hair styles everywhere I went! I took a lot of photos for inspiration ;) . Now that I have returned from break perms are officially over. (yeessss!!!!) I’ll be starting up again with facials, pedicures and manicures!  Should be fun..I’ve never had a facial before so I’m looking forward to it.   I hope Everyone enjoyed your holidays and I’ll post photos from my travels :)

A Different Kind of Mani-Pedi in Rio

_MG_2364

So following my own advice to “Beautify” yourself this holiday, I went and got a Mani-Pedi at a small salon in Copacabana.  Just arranging the appointment was enough of a chore to justify the spa treatment, let alone a Christmas gift to myself.  First, I don’t speak Portuguese.  Second, I scheduled my appointment for last Tuesday.  When I arrive, apparently I mixed up the times.  My appointment was at 18:00, 6pm, which I thought was 7pm.  Why are we the only country (USA) that doesn’t use 24 hour time?

Lemon Glazed Gingersnap Cookies

lemon glazed ginger cookies

Christmas time= Cookie time!!! My Beauty Baker has a last minute recipe for Santa, Lemon Glazed Gingersnap Cookies!!!  With only 33 calories per cookie and 6 grams of carbohydrates these cookies are good to eat all the way into the New Year’s resolutions of healthy habits, and a great alternative to the Lemon Sugar Cookie.  Using fresh lemons for the juice is key.  They provide rich flavor, tropical aromas, and are full of Vitamin C!  Buy a bunch, not only are lemons great to cook with you can use the juice as a home remedy for blemishes. Just apply a dab of fresh lemon daily to reduce and heal your blemishes.  As with any home remedy, patience and consistency is imperative for results!

Enjoy the holidays!!

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  Marina has now taken on to abusing Miss Susy’s hair with consistent perming.  She’s just a head, no brain, so no talking back, or asking for a refund.
