Life as a Hairstylist’s Apprentice – Rockin’ the Perm – Hawk

photo

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  Salon Evol has been pumpin’ out great looks and keeping Marina busy on perms since last week.   With the holiday’s approaching appointments are filling up at Salon Evol which left little time for the staff to re-vamp their own color and cuts.  Luckily, Marina was able to assist Jesse and Licia on some hair coloring and shampooing for themselves.  But back to the main focus of this hairstyling lesson, PERMS!

Perms perms perms!!!

Perms have filled my last two weeks! Oh lovely perms! How I love thee!

I have improved soo much since the first day, it’s ridiculous.  So far I’ve mastered the Regular Wrap Perm, and I just learned the Piggy Back Perm, a.k.a. The Spiral Perm.  It’s easier to roll the Piggy Back with longer hair.  The only downfall is that your rolling twice as many rods so you need to be quick and efficient.  Miss Tonya wants me to roll a full head in 30 minutes!  If she would have demanded that a week ago I would have laughed out loud!  I’ve timed myself already and so far I’ve got it down to 90 minutes.  Yes, I still need lots of practice, but on a positive note my sections are neat and clean. The rods are rolling up straight and tight.  The only problems I’ve been noticing are around the crown of Miss Suzy.  I couldn’t figure out why everytime I get to that section of the hair my rods tend to become further spaced apart.  After talking with Tonya I realized that I wasn’t pulling the hair at a 90 degree angle.

“It needs to be rolled at a 90 degree angle, and the shape of the head changes from top to bottom.”

You can see below my progression with the rollers:

After some minor angle adjustments it started looking perfect :-) .  Miss Tonya keeps reminding me that the state board test is timed, and I need to be neat and quick!  I’ve got my sectioning down to 15 minutes.  Which is right where it needs to be so I’m happy for now :-) . Yay!

Doing my apprenticeship at the salon is nice because it gives me the opportunity to take some breaks from the repetitive perming process!  Yesterday we took advantage of a nice quiet day before the holiday rush to color everyone’s hair.  I mostly helped by shampooing, but Tonya and Jesse did walk me through applying Jesse’s color and placing some foils!! And I must say it did come out amazing!  I’ll post pics soon! I’ve noticed I’m developing bad habits with the shampooing though, like bringing my sopping wet hands across the their eyes and drowning the clients!! N-O-T Good!! I did however give the best shampoo of the day when it was Tonyas turn.  Thank goodness! She was the last one and I had a bit of practice before hand. Heheh.  It’s kind of difficult to wash color out.  You wouldn’t think that it seems much different than a regular wash, but when you actually get in there and washing you’ll notice that all the color needs to be removed from the hairline.  It’s somewhat tedious and you don’t want any remaining color stains on the client’s head, scalp, ears, or face.  Like I said, ” the head.”

“Color removes color!” That’s what they all keep telling me.

First, before you add water on the head, or anything, you emulsify the color into the skin with color.

“Ok! Color removed!  Onto shampoo!!”

It was turning out to be  a really fun day!    I was also blow drying for Sean!  My brother’s girlfriend, Marissa came in to see Sean. He did her hair color, and I blew her beautiful hair dry!  Nice!  These types of things keep me from getting discouraged while doing all the repetitive stuff, like rollers and perms.  It’s nice to have a break from daily classes to check out the more advanced side or hairstyling and assist!
