Life as a Hairstylist’s Apprentice – Marina learns the technique of a proper Shampoo
BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice. We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life. Shampooing someone’s hair the “Salon Way” is a lot more difficult than it seems. We all shampoo our own hair, men, women, and children alike, but doing it as a profession requires a certain amount of skill. It is much more than just wetting the hair and scalp and applying shampoo. You need to watch water temperature and be careful not to drench your client’s face. It sounds so simple, but the simplest task can require the most difficult attention.
My shampoos have gotten much better! I’m no longer drowning clients with my wet hands as I was before, lol! I am confident with what I’m doing now so when a stylist needs some extra help at the salon I am more than willing to jump in and shampoo clients. Sometimes I even blow dry their hair out for the stylists. It’s been nice with the holiday rush because there is more for me to help with. A lot of parents are bringing their kids in for Thanksgiving cuts, and men and women have been booking appointments before their holiday parties. I love being involved in the entire salon atmosphere, and I cannot wait until next year when I’m behind the chair for real. A licensed stylist!
Perming is starting to get under my skin! It’s just so boring and I have to keep reminding myself why I am repeating it over and over again. I’m going on three weeks now! I was supposed to learn the Spiral Perm yesterday but my teacher, Miss Tanya, is so amazing and she let me take a break and taught me finger waves instead. It was almost as exciting as walking into gym class in High school with the expectation of running the mile and the teacher says, “Today Pick teams, we are playing dodgeball!!” Heck yea! Now, I know what your thinking..finger waves? Why is that a good thing? They are definatly NOT easier! It’s just as frustrating as the spiral perm and way more challenging, but change is good. It keeps the mind from boredom.:) Fingerwaves are actually a very beautiful way of styling. They can add a little sass to any updo and with the right patience, which is required for completing the proper technique, can look amazing! Learning this is really helping me now with combing. The hair has to be combed perfectly smooth with no spaces or ridges in between before you begin a fingerwave. After the hair has been combed perfectly smooth then you work on finger placement. Oohh after about 2 hours of this I finally got ONE perfect wave!! And oh it was beautiful!!! Miss Tonya says I can take a break from perms and work on finger waving for the next week, and I need to get the whole head perfect. The pressure is on, but I’m not worried! I’ve got my comb, and I’m ready to rock!! I’m done with school for the rest of this week; the salon is closed until Monday for holiday vacation, and I’m off to South Carolina for a much needed break to visit my family for some good southern cooking (although my books are in tow and I’m still studying away even on break)!! I mean business darlings!! This is real passion in the making!
Happy Thanksgiving!
xoxo
