Marina’s First Highlights… So what do you think?

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  The phone has been ringing off the hook for girl time, now that free pedicures are running the telephone lines.  Next up for these lovely ladies is some new color to match there perfectly painted piggies!  Color theory!

This week I started learning color theory, and the proper way to actually apply color.  I have my own personal appointment book and I was pleased, and surpised to see how fast my friends wanted to donate their hair to me!!   Almost faster than their toes! I am utterly flattered that they trust me enough to permanetly color their hair.  A girl knows what her hair means to her.  We will sacrafice many things in life, dignity.. honor.. a reputation.. not our hair.  So I’m just as excited as they are to test out my new color theory skills. 

This week I did Licia’s hair on Wednesday morning, and then Tonya let me halp her haircolor also.  Although I’m not creating my own formulas yet, I am mixing and applying the color.  Just starting to learn the concept of developers and the ratio of color to developers.  A lot of chemistry is involved.  You would have never guessed that all those numbers on those boxes have important meaning. It’s going to be a long bumpy road, but I have a lot of ideas and support so I’m ready for it!!

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  After a basic taste of all the aspects of hair procedures and applications, it’s time to move onto the skin and body.  Marina’s now taking on Pedicures, and her friends, well anyone who is offered free pedicures is lucky.

Miss Tonya and I had a relaxing evening in front of the brand new wood stove at her place last night where I spent the evening learning pedicures!  Tonya has a pedicure bath at her house so we decided to take a break from the early morning lessons, and work at night.   First, she gave me a full on pedicure to show me all the steps:

The trimming, filing, cuticle pushing, massaging, and polishing.

It was definatly nice to go home and learn that hehe (wink wink).  Afterwards it was my turn, and I practiced on her .  Who knew learning could be so tranquil.  It worked out for both of us, and our toes were happy.  The night class was a plus.

Pedicures are very beneficial to know; a good skill.  They’re not on the state test, but still good information to know all-the-same.  Now I can pamper my sisters and friends, and my Mama with free pedicures..tips are always appreciated though

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  During the Pennsylvania winter Marina has been squeezing in time for snowboarding, studying, and rocking some hair.  Since the graduation of perms she’s moved onto chemical relaxers aka hair straighteners.  It’s literally a chemical solution that “relaxes” or loosens curly hair.  

Aaahhh…Chemical relaxers! And that’s a relaxing aaaahhhhh!! This is more my style!  I’m not going to lie I’m still slightly intimidated by the perm, but it was time for Miss Tanya to move onto relaxers.  It’s actually not at all like it’s tranquil name, relaxer.  The tricky part to master is that you need to be super fast with a relaxer because the chemical starts processing as soon as it hits the hair!!! EEEEEP!  So, literally, I need to finish the enitire head from root to ends in 10 mins, and then I let it process.  I’ve been doing the chemical relaxers for about two weeks so I’ve come a long way.  My application time has gone down from the 45 minutes I started at.  I got an A+ in class today when I actually did the entire chemical process.   To practice without the chemicals I used conditioner and various gels, and then I was graduated to actually use the chemicals.  As you can see in the above picture the final product came out amazing!!  The hair doesn’t feel nearly as dry and damaged as I thought it might.  This is especially unique because I had just permed her hair a few weeks ago.  What do you think?

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  Marina has now taken on to abusing Miss Susy’s hair with consistent perming.  She’s just a head, no brain, so no talking back, or asking for a refund.

Well I’ve accomplished the regular wrap perm.   Which is the standard wrap:  First you wrap the hair into nine sections, and then you start wrapping backwards into the Mohawk.  Finally, you make your way across to the sides of the head.

Then came the piggyback perm.  Which rolls exactly like the regular perm, you just use two rods instead of one.  This type of wrap creates a more spiral curl.  The main focus I had after taking a break with fingerwaves was working on the actual spiral perm.  It’s a lot easier than the other perms and different.  With a true spiral perm you don’t need 9 sections, you start on the Bottom with 1/2″ section.  Then you section off a 1/2″ square , so it would be 1/2″x 1/2″, and you roll the rod up but on an angle so all the rods should lay vertical.

This is by far the easiest perm. But it comes out straight from the 80’s, and miss suzy’s hair no longer looks long.  That’s for sure!! Her hair is a bit frzzy because she’s been putting up with a lot of abuse.  She needs a haircut bad!!! Unfortunately it’s not time for that…she’ll have to suffer a bit longer!

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  The Finger wave challenge has been won!!  The technique was proven difficult to master, and although Marina is not quite there yet she’s made a great leap towards her goal.  Luckily she’s got a whole team to help her on her journey..

Fingerwaves complete!! My teacher has passed me on this lesson and granted permission to move on!! YES!! It’s so great to have this apprenticeship with so many great stylists.  Each day I kept trying to complete this finger waves style, and I just couldn’t get the idea of how to do it correctly.  I was frustrated.  I reread the chapter over and over and over, and I tried to pinpoint my problems, but couldn’t find the issue. Sean would explain it to me his way, and then Tonya would explain it to me her way.  Then Jesse would explain it his way, and then Michael, the obiwon, jumped in and showed me one last trick.  Finally it then clicked!  I was finally forming ridges that looked like fingerwaves, far from perfect , but still passable!!  Wooo hooo! Onto the next section of this chapter..I should have a test coming up soon!!  Back to the books friends…

BeautySmack has been following Marina, and her life as the real beauty school apprentice.  We’re updating you for a taste of what is going on in this hairstylist – to – be’s life.  Finger waves were a popular look in the 1920’s, and still a popular technique in beauty school.  Using pins instead of curling irons or other appliances is the trick with this technique.  Primitive, maybe.  Necessary to learn. Maybe if the Bob’s return and need a little softer edge. 

Fingerwaveing….ahhhh!  I now fully understand why it’s so helpful.  Doing this defiantly shows me how to move, and to use the hair. My ridges aren’t quite big enough to call it a fingerwave yet, but it’s getting there!  After the holiday break and a quick trip to visit the family coming home from a nice mini vacation I started right up again with fingerwaves.  And I will continue them until at least the end of this week but defiantly not quit until I get it down to a science!  I’ve been waving poor Suzy’s hair for three days now, and thank goodness she’s so patient with me!  Although I was starting to think she was getting frustrated too, she was stuck on the tripod, and when I pulled her off she hit me under my chin!! Oowww!! I am more cautious now not to lean over her when removing her from her stand!!  Well I pulled my book out today in hopes for a different direction on the process of fingerwaving, and I think I have an even better understanding after reading.  Isn’t that what textbooks are for. So today I will master the fingerwaves!!! I will post pics whether good or bad and let you be the judge of my progress!!!
